Before deciding to spread God’s word in China, Sheffield had fought in the U.S. Civil War. He was fearless and determined. Even after surviving an apparently random attack from a mad Chinese carpenter that left Sheffield with more than thirty wounds, he was undeterred. In the early 1880s, Sheffield began contemplating the use of stamped Chinese characters.
